Melons

Melons are refreshingly sweet summer fruits and originate from Africa or Asia. Botanically speaking, all melon species belong to the pumpkin family [Cucurbitaceae]. However, they do not form a group of their own, but are divided into four other genera: the watermelons [Citrullus] and the muskmelons, honeydew melons and the well-known cucumbers [Cucumis] form two genera. The lesser-known Nara melons [Acanthosicyos] and the only species of their genus, the wax melon or wax gourd [Benincasa], represent the two other genera.
Because of their high water content, melons are valued in the kitchen and serve as thirst quenchers on hot days.
Because of their sensitivity to cold, melons are often pre-cultivated, but direct sowing in a warm environment also promises success. In temperate climates, the heat-loving plants are ideally pre-cultivated from mid-April and planted in the greenhouse. In subtropical climates, cultivation outdoors from March to May is common. Details in the descriptions.
In addition of different flavors, our selection of melons also includes robust varieties for cooler regions. We offer you here melon varieties that have proven themselves in self-sufficiency.
